2008-2009 PROGRAMME

EXTRA FILM NIGHTS!
PLUS FREE INTRODUCTORY GUEST TICKET

Your continuing support means we can extend our season by adding four more film nights. Extra titles plus more two-nighters!

All members receive a complimentary guest ticket on joining or rejoining: please use it to introduce a friend, family or neighbour. Like last year, it's valid for the five shows up to the end of November. We've included a spare programme to pass on. Also, if you introduce a new member and enclose their membership application(s) with your own, we'll be happy to reduce your re-joining subscription by £5 for each new member.

In these days of rising prices, I am sure you will agree that the season ticket still offers fantastic value! And you know that by joining, you are supporting the independent film distribution circuit and keeping access to titles that would otherwise struggle to get a view.

Please note that guest tickets are no longer available from Berkhamsted Library, but we are happy to welcome guests on the night.Tickets are now available on the door at £5.00 each. Please note the space for your e-mail address on the application slip. That way you can be sure of hearing our latest news, any changes to our published screenings, and so on.

All performances start at 8.00 pm at Berkhamsted Civic Centre. Our screenings use DVD Digital Projection, and Dolby Multi-Channel Sound.

Visit our website www.berkfilmsoc.freeserve.co.uk for any programme updates and useful film links.

Join us for an opening night glass of wine in the Foyer Bar, before "Kite Runner", Monday September 22nd or Tuesday September 23rd. Looking forward to seeing you!!

Two seasons ago we celebrated our fortieth anniversary. Click here for a summary of the first 40 years, extracted from the Society's Archives. It makes interesting reading!

The First Forty Years of the Film Society

About Ourselves

(NB for a more detailed summary, see the page about our 40th Anniversary)
Berkhamsted Film Society was started in 1967 by a group of cine enthusiasts in the Berkhamsted area. It has been thriving ever since, with a steady membership even in recent years as high as 250. We run about 15 films a year, in the Civic Centre At Berkhamsted, starting at 8.00pm. Those films which we guess will attract the majority of our members we show for two nights running, to give people a greater opportunity to come along.

Until recent years we ran exclusively 16mm films, and the stock available up to that point had been adequate for our choice. Clearly, video projection techniques have been coming along very rapidly, and many titles were beginning to be available only on DVD, so we decided in 2002 that the time was right to invest in the new video projection and associated surround sound equipment. We are confident that we can offer our members a greater variety of titles and much improved quality at a reasonable cost, using up-to-date techniques.

Each year we have a Film Party at the end of the season where members have a chance to enjoy light refreshment with a film, and a Film Quiz or similar entertainment afterwards.

Programme Notes

There is a brief note in the programme given out to members each year, and where possible we hand out a representative film crit at each showing. We are often asked for more details, and indeed for information about films in general. We are also posting a choice of two suitable references on our Film Programme page on this website. Members of the Committee do receive the current film catalogues and magazines, and are happy to pass on information where possible. Also, now there is so much information on the Internet, particularly about the film world, it is relatively easy for people to find what they need for themselves. You might care to try the following:

British Film Institute at British Film Institute

or:

Internet Movie Database at Internet Movie Database

and:

There is much information available on the film world at The Unofficial UK Filmsocs Website

Audience Response

We encourage our audience to award "marks" to films after each showing. The results, when collated, make interesting reading. Click here to see what members have thought of our selection to date:
